The final assignment leading into the Winter Break is to do some research on employment standards in Alberta and Canada.

Take a look at the Alberta Employment Standards Website and answer the following questions:
  1. What is the minimum amount of times an employee must be paid per month? 
  2. If you are terminated or fired from your position at work, how long must you wait to be paid for the hours owed to you? This is the maximum wait time.
  3. What is the minimum wage that an employer must pay an employee in Alberta?
  4. What is the maximum number of hours a person may work in a row on a single day? (This can include overtime)
  5. What is the minimum amount of hours you would work in a row to receive a 30 minute break or two 15 minute breaks? Do employers have to give you these breaks?
  6. Overtime must be paid to employees after _____ hours of work in one day or ______ hours per week?
  7. Overtime must be at least ______ the employees regular wage?
  8. What kinds of things can an employer deduct from your paycheque? What can he NOT make deductions for?
  9. Young workers 15, 16 or 17 years old must have __________ with them if they are working an evening shift that lasts past 9:00 p.m.
  10. What hours is an "adolescent" (12-14) NOT allowed to work during?
  11. What jobs can adolescents work in?
  12. What is Holiday Pay and who receives it?
  13. What is Vacation Pay? How much Vacation Pay do you get after 1 year of employment? What about as a part-time worker?
  14. How much notice must your employer give you to terminate your employment?
  15. How much notice must you give your employer to terminate your employment?
  16. What is maternity leave? How long is maternity leave?
  17. What is parental leave? How long is parental leave?
Next, take a look at the Canadian Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Guide for Teens and this video and answer the following questions:


  • What basic rights do you have as a worker in Canada?
  • What should you do if an employer is sending you to do something you feel is unsafe?


Read the stories on the CCOHS website Take some notes on how these incidents could have been avoided.


All of this information will be assessed with a quiz on January 6th after we return from break.

Your homework to complete before the end of class is to set up an assignment folder in Google Drive.

  • Log in to Google Drive with your student webmail, @EDUCBE.CA account (Ask Way if you can't remember it)
  • Create a folder that is named [YourLastName][YourFirstName]Connect
    • For example, Mr.Parhar's would be WayMitchellConnect (use underscores if the lack of spaces makes you uncomfortable).
  • Share the folder with Way at: DSPARHAR@EDUCBE.CA 
  • A Don't Panic picture will appear next to Way's name if you did it correctly.

Assignment: Resume of the Future

This month we will be looking at resumes and job interview skills.
Your assignment is a simple one, to write the resume that you want to have when you are 25.

  • What kinds of things do you want to have accomplished by the time you are 25?
  • What work experience/ volunteering/ education do you want to have on your resume by 25?


Please follow the proper format (From last week's post) for your resume and feel free to book a time with Mr.Way during Success time for editing help.
